The iPhone? It’s More Important Than the Steam Engine, Shoes and Painkillers!

The iPhone? It’s More Important Than the Steam Engine, Shoes and Painkillers!

A survey carried out by Tesco Mobile in the UK asked 4000 consumers what they considered the most important inventions of all time were, with the iPhone coming a frankly astonishing eighth when the results were compiled!
Don’t get us wrong, we love the iPhone to death, but do we think it’s the eighth most important invention of all time?  Well, let’s put the result in perspective first, as here is the top 20 from Tesco Mobile’s survey:
  1. Wheel.
  2. Aeroplane.
  3. Lightbulb.
  4. Internet.
  5. PCs.
  6. Telephone.
  7. Penicillin.
  8. iPhone.
  9. Flushing toilet.
  10. Combustion engine.
  11. Contraceptive pill.
  12. Washing machine.
  13. Central heating.
  14. Fridge.
  15. Painkillers.
  16. Steam engine.
  17. Freezer.
  18. Camera.
  19. Cars.
  20. Spectacles.
Honestly?  We would be unlikely to place the iPhone above any of these if we were told one of them had to be erased from time like it never happened!  It gets worse too, as the remainder of the ‘100 Greatest Inventions’ list includes many other items generally considered to be quite good things, for example the knife and fork, space travel, hot running water, the pen and air conditioning.
Don’t worry though, the UK has at least put the iPhone above Facebook (82), Post-it Notes (90), Google (25), football (69) and hair dye (84).
For anyone who doesn’t know and in the interests of full disclosure – on their part – Tesco Mobile does happen to sell rather a lot of iPhones in the UK.  A mere coincidence we’re sure.
