iOS 4 : Everything You Need to Know

Finally, Apple renamed its mobile device operating system, replacing the former iPhone OS 4 moniker with “iOS 4”. The new operating system, which includes the ability to multitask, along with a unified e-mail box and app folders - among the most wanted features mentioned by users. Here, in handy bullet point form, are all the things you need to know about iOS 4.

Notable iOS 4 new features for iPhone 4 users:

  • Multitasking
The biggest new feature is multitasking, which is annoyed iPhone users for years that they can only perform one task at a time on their device. Thankfully, Apple doesn't disappoint us this time, and bring it to iPhone 4 with iOS 4. You just need to double-tap the home button to bring up a dock of (admittedly, only four) running applications you can switch to while staying in another app. Moreover, according to Steve Jobs' statement, this multitasking function doesn't eat extra battery, which is really good.
  • iBooks
Book reader is the hottest point for iPad since its release. Just as many people expected, iBooks really appears on iPhone with iOS 4. You can easily flip through the pages of a book you've downloaded from the iBookstore while listening to your music collection. Browse tens of thousands of books — many of them free — by title, author, or genre. You can even check out reviews and read sample pages before you buy. This is said the best way to browse, buy and read books.
  • Ehanced Email
You can have a merged inbox view, switch between inboxes quickly, and sync to more than one Exchange account. There's also threaded messaging (at last!) and in-app attachment viewing.
  • App Folders for Sorting Apps
Instead of having 180 icons on your iPhone home screen, folders here give you the ability to hoard up to 2,000 apps on your iPhone. It's more about organization than anything else – making it easier to group your applications into elements such as game apps, sports apps, utilities etc. The folders themselves will auto-name, or you also can call them what you like. This is really a good manager for your iPhone Apps.
  • Social Network Integration
Along with the popularity of social network like Facebook, twitter and so on, social network integration is also eagerly expected. iOS 4 brings it to our iPhone now. You can follow your friends easily on iPhone now.
  • Game Center
iOS 4 brings a new game center for iPhone users. On this new OS, game players can invite their friends to play together. There is ranking list for the game, and you can make a game appointment for next time. This new game center gathers all player around the world, which makes it rather strong.
  • Internet Tethering from AT&T
Tethering was first revealed as a feature of the iPhone last year with the iPhone OS 3.0. However, while some international carriers supported Internet tethering, AT&T did not because its network couldn't support the wireless traffic. The same concerns with the network's durability delayed the rollout of MMS. Now it looks like AT&T is finally confident that it can support tethering for its data-hungry customers. Among the new options in the iOS 4, beta version 4 is the option to set up Internet tethering with AT&T via phone or web.
  • iAd -- A "breakthrough mobile advertising platform" that will essentially allow advertisers to embed "mini-applications" within iPhone apps that choose to support the iAd advertising system. Apple provides 60% of the advertising revenue generated to application developers.
  • File Sharing
Yes, you read that right. Apple is finally going to allow you to transfer files to and from your iPhone straight from your computer. It works like this: You plug your iPhone into iTunes, head on over to the Apps page and scroll down. From there you'll be able to drag files to and from your iPhone and your computer. We have not been able to get the feature to work as of yet, but it seems a lock that support will be enabled for more than the Mail app. That is if this feature makes it past the development stage.

iOS 4 supported iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad models:

iOS 4 supports the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and 32 GB and 64 GB configurations of the third generation iPod touch. A version of iOS 4 scheduled for release "this fall" will support the iPadmultitasking. The original iPhone and original iPod touch are not supported at all. models completely as well. iOS 4 supports the iPhone 3G, 8GB configuration of the third generation iPod touch, and second generation iPod touch as well although Apple notes that "not all features are compatible" including
